In a context of greater mobility and globalisation, a new grant programme has recently been set up by Wallonia-Brussels International (WBI).

This programme sets out to reflect the themes of the competitiveness clusters designated by the MARSHALL plan, a plan launched by the Walloon Region of Belgium. It is designed to allow our Universities to host university students from institutions of excellence abroad. An identical programme exists for graduates from Wallonia and Brussels who wish to study in a university of excellence abroad.   1. Grants of a duration of at least 1 year at doctorate or post-doctorate level
    • Duration : at least 1 year
    • Field : With the aim of supporting the various competitiveness clusters of the MARSHALL plan, priority will be given to the following fields of study :
      • transport and logistics
      • mechanical engineering
      • life sciences
      • agri-food industry
      • aeronautics - aerospace
      Consideration may also be given to all other fields of study, human, fundamental or applied sciences.

    • Countries concerned : applicants are welcome from all countries.
    • Submission of applications
      Please note :

      all applications must be accompanied by the letter of intent or the admission letter of the host institution in Wallonia-Brussels.

      The complete application is to be sent by the applicant to WBI :

    • Start of the programme : September to August of the concerned academic year
    • Form to be downloaded : click here
    • Deadline for submissions : 1st March 2010 for periods of study during the academic year 2010-2011
    • Selection : WBI shall carry out the selection of the applications in cooperation with all of the scientific, academic and institutional partners concerned by the programme. In principle, the decision will be taken by the 15th of Jully 2010 at the latest.
    • Visa : The visa application must be carried out by the recipient via the Belgian Diplomatic or Consular body in their country. For this purpose, WBI will provide the recipient with a document attesting to the awarding of the grant to facilitate the procedure.
    • Financial terms and conditions
      • Monthly amount : 1,200 € covering subsistence and accommodation costs, course books, travelling expenses inside the country and the thesis costs;
      • WBI will pay for one single return airline ticket ;
      • WBI will cover the cost of taking out a « healthcare » policy for countries outside the European Union ;
      • The WBI will cover the registration fees up to a maximum amount of 837 € or administrative costs of 500 €
    • Study visit report
      Two months at the latest after the end of the programme, the recipient must write a report on the conditions of the stay in the French-speaking Community of Belgium (programme followed, conditions of stay, suggestions etc.) This document will make it possible to pinpoint the strengths of the programme followed as well as any weaknesses. It will serve as a documentary reference for future recipients. The reports must be stamped by the academic head(s) of the host university. This will be sent by WBI to all the scientific, academic and institutional partners concerned by the programme.
    • Compendium of former recipients of excellence grants
      The recipient agrees to be entered into the compendium drawn up by WBI and to keep it informed of their future career.


  2. Short term research grants of a duration of 1 to 3 months
    • Duration : 1 to 3 months maximum
    • Field : With the aim of supporting the various competitiveness clusters of the MARSHALL plan, priority will be given to the following fields :
      • transport and logistics
      • mechanical engineering
      • life sciences
      • agri-food industry
      • aeronautics - aerospace
      Consideration may also be given to all other fields of study, human, fundamental or applied sciences.
